No one wants to stay stagnant and in the same role forever. People need to grow and develop. This is why you need to begin training staff with the GROW model. It’s designed to help you with this process.
What Is the GROW Model?
The word “GROW” in this context is an acronym. The G stands for Goal. This is something that you want to put into place when you’re training staff, as they need specific things to work towards.
The goal can be anything that you want it to be, including a promotion, a raise, a reward of some sort, or even the chance to become a mentor, much like the role that you’re filling at the moment.
The R in GROW stands for Reality. It could also be “right now.” Basically, this is where the employee that you’re mentoring or training currently is in their development. How much do they know? What do they need to learn? Where do they need to go (metaphorically) in order to achieve the goals that you’ve set for them?
Next is the O, also known as Options. When you’re training staff, you need to determine what’s keeping them from moving forward with their careers. What are their options at the moment? Another word that it could stand for is Obstacles.
In order to advance, they need to get over what those obstacles are, and it’s your job to determine the path that they will take.
Finally, there’s the W or Will. Work is another word that the W could be. What will it take to meet those goals? What path will the employee need to take? How much work do they need to put in?
Again, it’s your job to go over this in detail and determine exactly what the next steps for that employee will be. You need to implement every part of the GROW model when you’re training staff, as it will help you set the right types of goals.
Why Is the GROW Model Important?
As a workplace manager in Ireland, you need to implement the GROW model in order to help your employees move up the ladder and learn new skills. When employees are allowed to stagnate, they stop achieving things. They show up at work and just go through the motions.
Sure, they might be getting a few things done here and there, and they might meet their performance goals (just barely), but are they happy? Could they be doing better? The answers to both of those questions are “yes.” You need to remember that stagnant employees aren’t good for company morale. Their co-workers see them getting paid for doing the bare minimum, so they begin to do the same themselves.
Or, those stagnant employees get bored with the job and start looking for a new place of employment. You’ll lose a formerly talented worker, just because you didn’t push them to GROW. Without growth, everything stays the same. This is a bad thing in the workplace, where innovation and constant growth are important.
Don’t let your employees remain complacent. Instead, push them to achieve with the GROW model.
How You Can Track Progress
Once you’ve implemented the GROW model and have started training staff, it’s time to track their progress. How far along on the plan are they? What are their goals and what steps have they taken to meeting them?
You need to not only set these plans in motion but also keep an eye on how successful your employees are as they go through the program. This is where tracking progress comes into play.
Use Software
Training staff is easy when you have tracking software in place. This is the easiest method of implementing and following the GROW model. There are HR (human resources) programs that do much more than just allow employees to track their time, change their schedules, and ask for days off.
Many of them have performance metrics built right into them. These metrics allow you to track the employee’s progress on the GROW model by writing up reports and appraisals, and even giving the employee a scorecard to see what they’ve achieved and how they can do better.
With these programs, you don’t need to use any additional GROW tracking methods. Everything will be right at your fingertips. If you want to implement this model, but don’t want to be buried in paperwork, then they are the best option.
